Pay it Forward – Networking Open Job Positions
As a recruiter, I know the importance of networking. I not only fill my open jobs but actively network with people within my communities whether it is our internal database or the various social media outlets. I think most recruiters truly understand the value in networking and we wish that others would as well.
When I have an open position that I am working on, I usually tackle it in a variety of ways- post the job on job boards, post it on LinkedIn and then I start networking. I look for people with a similar background to the position that I am trying to fill and then try to engage with them either via email or by picking up the phone and calling them.
While a lot of people are very respective and will forward the job details to their network or colleagues that they think might be interested. I would say the vast majority are unresponsive or, in some cases, they will respond to me that they are annoyed by me contacting them.
I am happily and gainfully employed today, but I realize that there are many people out there that are not. One of the greatest joys that I get as a recruiter is helping good people find good jobs- regardless if they are my jobs. Whenever another recruiter reaches out to me about trying to fill a position – I immediately look through my contacts to see if I know anyone that might fit the bill.
I don’t think people realize how important “paying it forward” is.
You may be employed today, but that could change tomorrow. Anyone that has been out of work, or is underemployed, knows how daunting job searching can be and you can easily feel defeated when application after application is ignored.
“Good people know good people,” and referrals are one of the best ways for companies to fill jobs.
So next time a recruiter reaches out to you to network, think twice before deleting their email or voicemail about who is in your network. You never know, the perfect person for the job might be right under your nose. Plus many companies and recruiters offer substantial referral bonuses if your referral is hired.
It truly is a win-win for all!
