Family Office Controller

Family office seats like this one do not come open often, and they rarely stay open long.
A respected Dallas single family office is hiring a Controller. About 15 teammates, a founder with a national reputation as an investor and philanthropist, and a portfolio that will actually hold your attention: private equity and venture, real estate, public markets, and an active charitable foundation doing real work in the community. Excellent and generous benefits, a gorgeous Uptown Dallas office, and accounting that is genuinely interesting on a Tuesday afternoon.
About the opportunity
You will own the month-end close across a complex set of entities covering cash, investment, and private equity accounts, with real ownership of equity balances and capital account activity. Capital calls, distributions, waterfalls, K-1s, custodian and investment manager coordination. If you like the mechanics of alternative investments, this is where you get to work in them every day rather than once a quarter.
This is a hands-on seat reporting to the Chief Accounting Officer. The team is small and capable, which means no shared services center, no forty-person department, and no wondering whether your work matters. It also means you do your own close and your own reconciliations. The right person likes it that way.
The office runs on a long-term horizon and a non-bureaucratic culture. They want someone who follows established process carefully and also raises a hand when something can be done better.
What you will do
- Own the month-end close end to end, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and equity and capital account activity
- Reconcile bank, brokerage, and money market accounts across multiple entities
- Track and record private equity capital calls and distributions, with clean tie-outs to investor and capital accounts
- Handle treasury work including wire initiation, cash monitoring across interest-bearing accounts, and money market proposals
- Prepare schedules, reports, and correspondence for internal leadership and outside partners
- Support fund and portfolio accounting in Archway and Canoe
- Process accounts payable
- Liaise with investment managers, custodians, and the outside tax firm
- Spot process gaps, propose fixes, and help implement them
What we are looking for
Must-haves:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting
- Solid full-cycle month-end close and reconciliation experience, with genuine command of equity accounting and capital account balances
- Experience reconciling bank, brokerage, and money market statements
- Strong Excel and Word, comfortable in Microsoft 365, and open to using AI tools in the work
- Precision. In this role, the details are the job
- Clear written and verbal communication with investment managers, custodians, and outside CPAs
- Discretion and judgment with confidential financial and personal information. Non-negotiable in a family office
Nice to have:
- Prior single family office or multi-family office experience
- Hands-on Archway and Canoe experience
- K-1 processing and coordination with outside tax preparers
- Understanding of capital call waterfalls and carried interest
- Multi-entity accounting background
- Master's degree or CPA
The details
Full time in the Uptown Dallas area. This is an in-office team and that is part of what makes it work, though there is some flexibility once you are up and running. Competitive compensation with an excellent and generous benefits package.
